What One Missed Call Actually Costs Your Business

Hint: it's a lot more than you think — and it compounds fast.

What One Missed Call Actually Costs Your Business

Every contractor knows missed calls cost money. But most underestimate how much money because they're thinking about it wrong. They think about the one job they didn't book. The real cost is the one job, plus the repeat business from that customer, plus the referrals, plus the competitor who got all of it instead.

Let's put real numbers on it.

The Per-Call Price Tag

Invoca analyzed thousands of home service calls in 2024 and landed on a figure that's hard to ignore: the average missed call costs a home service business $1,200 in lost revenue (Invoca, 2024). Housecall Pro independently validated this number in their own analysis.

That's not the big jobs pulling up the average. That's the blended reality across routine service calls, emergency work, and larger projects. Here's what a single call is worth by trade:

TradeTypical Service CallLarger Projects
HVAC$150–$500$5,000–$12,500 (system replacement)
Plumbing$135–$300$450+ (emergency call)
Roofing$393–$1,939 (repair)$7,000–$15,000 (full replacement)
Electrical$150–$400Varies by scope
Painting$967–$3,041 (room)$1,800–$4,400 (exterior)
Handyman$150–$600 per job$60–$85/hour

That HVAC system replacement? One missed call. That emergency plumbing job at 9 PM on a Saturday? One missed call. The customer who needed three rooms painted and would've told their neighbor about you? One missed call.

It's Not One Call — It's a Chain Reaction

The $1,200 figure only captures the immediate job. It doesn't account for what that customer would have been worth over time.

ServiceTitan surveyed over 1,000 commercial service contractors and found repeat customers generate 69% of work volume and 44% of total revenue (ServiceTitan, 2022). BIA Advisory Services found that repeat customers spend 67% more than first-time customers (BIA Advisory Services/Forbes). And the classic Bain & Company research still holds: increasing customer retention by just 5% boosts profits by 25–95% (Bain & Company/HBR).

So when you miss that first call, you're not losing one job. You're losing the 4-5 future jobs that customer would have brought you, plus whatever referrals they would have sent your way.

The Monthly Bleed

Let's make this concrete. Say you're an HVAC contractor getting 150 calls a month (realistic for a small shop in Phoenix). If you're missing 27% of those calls — the industry average per Invoca — that's 40 missed calls per month.

At $1,200 per missed call, that's $48,000 per month in potential revenue. Even if only half of those callers were real leads (Invoca says 47% are), you're still looking at roughly $23,000/month walking away.

A 2025 Vida survey published in Entrepreneur found 42% of small business owners estimate losing at least $500 per month to missed calls (Entrepreneur, 2025). Based on the actual data, the real number is probably 10-50x that. AMBS Call Center estimates the average small business forfeits $126,000 annually from unanswered calls (AMBS Call Center, 2025).

For a plumbing business missing 8 calls per week, Suzee AI calculated the annual loss at roughly $50,000 on the conservative end (Suzee AI, 2025).

Your Competitor Thanks You

Here's the part that should make this personal: 62% of callers will immediately call a competitor when you don't answer (Ring Eden/Aira, 2025). And 78% of customers buy from the first business that responds (MIT/InsideSales.com).

So your missed call isn't just lost revenue for you — it's a delivered lead for whoever picks up next. You paid for the Google ad or the Nextdoor presence that generated that call, and your competitor closed it for free.

What $149 Buys You

A single missed HVAC service call costs $150–$500. A single missed system replacement inquiry costs $5,000–$12,500. StrideVoice Solo Operators costs $149/month.

The product pays for itself after one answered call. Everything after that is profit you were previously leaving on the table.
